Connecting Redlining and Gun Violence in Philadelphia

  • First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Redlining is an illegal practice by which lenders avoid providing credit or financial services to communities of color based on their race or national origin. Unfortunately, the practice has a long and enduring history in the United States and has greatly contributed to wealth inequality among its citizens. In particular, it has defined the neighborhoods in Philadelphia from the 1920s to the present day.

The 57+ Blocks Coalition is a group of over 70 organizations around Philadelphia dedicated to reducing gun violence. The premise of the Coalition is that gun violence is most prevalent in the formally redlined areas of Philadelphia: specifically, major portions of North Philadelphia, West Philadelphia, and lower Germantown. Join a discussion of solutions to reduce that gun violence led by Greg Holston, a social and racial justice activist who previously served as a senior advisor on policy and advocacy at the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.

Christian Education Programs Begin

Christian Education programs for adults and children begin next Sunday, September 22nd at 9:45 AM.

Children's Sunday school is held in the Cochran Room on the lower level, and is targeted towards children aged 3 and up. The curriculum this year focuses on learning the essential stories of the people of God through the Bible and emphasizes personal discovery, wonder, and exploration. Contact Rev. Sarah Weisiger for more information.

Adult CE meets in the MacColl Room (on the upper level). Sunday's class will be "A Presbyterian Primer" taught by Dr. Baron Mullis. For those who want a "tune-up" on their basic understanding of Presbyterianism, Baron will explore the evolution of the denomination (and theology) that we call home. For information contact Carol Cook.

Muslim and Christian Connections: an Interfaith Conversation

Join us on February 24th at 9:45 in the MacColl Room, when the adult education class will feature Celebration Team Leader Rev. Megan LeCluyse and Patricia Anton, Chaplain of Penn’s Muslim Life Program. We'll learn about a close-to-home interfaith experience. The two associations began to share space a year ago, and the chaplains will talk about what the experience has been like and how their students have benefited. Patty's background has often included interfaith work. For Megan, being in this close to interfaith relationship is new and has been a wonderful opportunity for building new relationships, learning about Islam and expanding the CA's understanding of hospitality. Feel free to email Megan questions you might want us to discuss before the 24th, or bring them with you!
